biography Fatimah Az-Zahra

Fatimah Az Zahra (r.a) was born in Makkah on a Friday 20th Jamadi ul akhir the year 615 AD. Her mother was the first and most respected wife of the Prophet s.a.w – Khadijah (r.a). Fatimah (r.a) was the fourth and youngest daughter from Khadijah (r.a).

After the migration to Madinah, Fatimah (r.a) was married off to Ali ibn Abu Talib (r.a), the Prophet’s cousin. She and her husband lived next door to the Prophet’s house. The Prophet s.a.w loved his daughter a lot and made it a point to bid her farewell whenever the Prophet s.a.w left for a journey. She was also the first person he sought out whenever he returned from his journey.

Fatimah (r.a) grew up in poverty because of the hardships the Prophet s.a.w. faced. After marriage, she continued to lead a simple life with her husband who laboured hard all day long to earn his livelihood. The couple were known for their generosity and piety. They never turned away a beggar at their door even if it meant they had to go without food themselves.

Fatimah (r.a) and Ali (r.a) had five children – three sons and two daughters. The three sons were Hasan Husain and Mohsin and the two daughters were Zainab and Umm Kulthum. Mohsin died young. The Prophet’s linage continued on through his grandsons, Hasan and Husain.

The Prophet s.a.w was extremely fond of Hasan and Husain. Once, during a ritual prayer, the Prophet s.a.w. went down in prostration and took a long time that people praying behind him began to wonder what had happened. After the prayer, they asked him what occurred. He explained that Husain had climbed on his back while he was in prostration (Husain had the habit of doing this while the Prophet was praying at home). The Prophet s.a.w said that he could not bring himself to physically move him so the Prophet s.a.w waited until he climbed down. He said that was the reason for the long prostration.

Fatimah (r.a) inherited the Prophet’s wisdom and determination as well as his devotion and worship to Allah. She was known to be absorbed in prayer from dusk to dawn.

The Prophet s.a.w said that there were four women that were the best in the world. They were Mary (the mother of Prophet Isa a.s.), Asiyah (the wife of Pharoah who nurtured Prophet Moses), Khadijah (the Prophet s.a.w. first wife) and Fatimah Az-Zahra.

Fatimah (r.a) did not live long after the Prophet s.a.w departed. She passed away just a couple of months after the Prophet s.a.w.departed. According to her wishes, she was buried by her husband, Ali (r.a) in Jannatul Baqi.
